The genre began with Breakout, released by Atari in 1976. Nolan Bushnell and Steve Bristow wanted a single-player evolution of Pong — and the prototype has one of the great origin stories in tech: Atari assigned it to a young Steve Jobs, who enlisted his friend Steve Wozniak to design the board in a legendary four-day, chip-minimizing sprint (Woz's design was so clever the factory couldn't manufacture it and re-engineered a conventional version). The two Steves founded Apple the same year.

A decade later, Taito's Arkanoid (1986) perfected the formula and invented most of what "brick breaker" means today: capsule power-ups, multiball, laser paddles, and enemy ships. The name "Brick Breaker" itself went mainstream on a very different screen — the version bundled with BlackBerry phones in the 2000s, played compulsively in a million meetings.

Our cabinet is a love letter to that whole lineage: Breakout's pure geometry, Arkanoid's power-up chaos, and the anywhere-anytime spirit of the phone era.

Move the paddle with ← →, the mouse, or your finger; launch and fire with Space or a tap. Where the ball hits the paddle controls its angle — the edges send it flat and fast, the center pops it straight up. Catch falling capsules for power-ups; some stack. Clear the wall and a tougher one takes its place.

Angle is everything: deliberately use the paddle edge to carve into side channels, then let the ball rampage above the wall — the classic Breakout "breakthrough" that gave the game its name. And don't chase every capsule; a mistimed grab trades a paddle for a power-up.
