The history of Asteroids

Asteroids was released by Atari in November 1979, conceived by Lyle Rains and designed and programmed by Ed Logg. It grew out of two threads inside Atari: an older idea about shooting destructible rocks, and the physics-driven feel of Computer Space and Lunar Lander — Logg famously borrowed Lunar Lander's thrust-and-inertia flight model, which is why the ship glides like it's really in space.

The look came from its hardware: instead of drawing pixels, Asteroids used a vector monitor (Atari's "QuadraScan" display work led by Howard Delman), tracing razor-sharp glowing lines onto the screen. That's the phosphor-line aesthetic this remake recreates with SVG glow.

It became Atari's best-selling coin-operated game ever — on the order of 70,000 cabinets — and was such a quarter-magnet that operators reportedly had to install bigger coin boxes. Players discovered "lurking," camping the screen edge and farming the 1,000-point small saucer, a strategy so effective that later revisions tightened the saucer's aim specifically to punish it. Ours tightens with your score, just like the original.

How to play

Rotate with ← → (or A/D), thrust with (or W), fire with Space, and jump to hyperspace with Shift or H — a true 1-in-10 chance of self-destructing, exactly like the arcade. Big rocks split 3 → 2 → 1 (20 / 50 / 100 points), the big saucer fires randomly (200), and the small saucer aims at you (1,000). Extra ship every 10,000 points. On a phone, on-screen touch controls appear automatically, and the ⛶ button plays fullscreen.

Tips from the arcade era

Keep your speed low — momentum kills more players than rocks do. Never clear the last small rock while a saucer wave is due; leaving one rock alive controls what spawns next. And treat hyperspace as a last resort, not a dodge button: a 10% death chance compounds fast.
